“The change we’re looking for is inside our hearts. Events are always effects. One day people love you; the next day you’re their target. One day things are going smoothly; the next day it feels like you’re a total failure. There will always be ups and downs in life. They are part of the human experience. But we can change the way we perceive them.
And that shift in our perception of things is a miracle.”
Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love
Can you imagine someone insulting you, and you not taking what they say personally because you see their internal reasons for behaving that way? Or perhaps you have made a mistake and your self-esteem is wounded, but instead, you are glad it happened because it allows you to practice forgiveness and self-love? Or some other painful event occurs, and besides the pain, you feel gratitude toward yourself for being able to endure it?
These are all instances of a miracle, because amidst the pain, sorrow, and fear, love, mercy, compassion, and inner strength are born. And this miracle happens only because we have decided to look at what is happening in a different way. The deepest change comes when we look through the eyes of our immortal part. Then, in all circumstances, we can feel acceptance and compassion for ourselves because we are finally free to choose the “different” reaction.
