“Nothing can happen because meditation, God, and prayer are not matters of technique. You can learn the technique, but nothing will happen until the question is first heard, until it becomes a deep longing within you for which you can stake your life—until it becomes a matter of life and death, until it penetrates the very center of your being, until it becomes a thorn in the heart, until it turns into a deep anguish and pain. If the question is heard, then the answer…” Osho, The Mustard Seed, Vol. 1
For me, this thought of Osho is very, very important because it points to the most fundamental reason why the changes in our lives, which we strive for so intensely, are still not happening. In such moments, it seems that we are doing everything right, making the correct efforts, yet nothing moves. And we ask ourselves, “Why?!” This is the answer—because changes occur only when the desire penetrates the very center of our being and we are ready to stake everything to achieve it.
In the battle between our conflicting inner desires, the strongest one wins. And this is not a matter of technique. It is a matter of life and death. Only with this kind of “question” can we transform our lives, and with nothing less. If you have recently become tired of trying to change your life and yet nothing is happening, perhaps this thought from Osho comes exactly at the right time?
