Self-Sacrifice

"Only when we sacrifice what we have can we know what we have. True sacrifice is made with the same firmness and lack of bargaining as is throwing something away. We can only do this if we are compelled by a greater force within us - a force stronger than the ego from which comes the necessary energy. We experience this force as an inner imperative that tells us we "must." In Jungian psychology we understand this as a message from the Self, the regulating center of the psyche. The sacrifice and that which is sacrificed are one and the same: it is always the Self." Marie-Louise von Franz
