The Mirror of Greed

“Kabir, the great master, had a son named Kamal. Kamal quarrelled with his father and settled opposite him. People came to Kabir to pay their respects, but he never accepted anything from them. Kamal’s fame also spread and people began to go to him as well, but he accepted all gifts. Kabir became very angry – how could his son be so greedy! He disowned him.

Then Kamal went to his father and said to him:

‘You got angry and gave yourself away; all your teaching not to be angry and not to be greedy is superficial. This is not your business. If I take diamonds, why does this interest you? Probably there is greed in you. Your greed can take over at any moment, just as your anger can. If there were no anger in you, you would simply witness that Kamal takes things and that is all. This is Kamal’s business – to take care of his own essence, this is not your business! I am not your disciple, I am a master myself.’

Kabir looked within himself and agreed with Kamal:

‘You are probably right. My interest and anger regarding the fact that you collect money demonstrates my greed, not your greed; it demonstrates my anger, not your anger.'”
