The parable of the deaf frog

This is one of my favorite healing stories.

So, once upon a time in the frog kingdom, there was a competition – they had to get to the top of a very, very tall tower. A group of contestants gathered, the bravest ones, and the others stood around to watch. The race began, but it soon became clear that the tower was too high. Some of the frog-watchers began to comment on how difficult and even impossible it was to reach the top. Others wondered how come they had chosen this particular inaccessible tower for this race.

Still others loudly expressed doubt that the target was chosen on purpose so that no one could win. It was not easy for the frog racers to hear such things. They began to doubt their own strength and one by one they began to fail. And the climb to the high tower was not easy, really. The endurance of their legs was put to a tremendous test! At the finish, there was only one frog left to reach the top.

What was the amazement, however, when they went to present him with his prize – it turned out that the frog was deaf! Not being able to hear the discouraging cheers of the crowd proved to be the deciding condition to get to the top. Very often we hear discouraging advice and opinions from our friends and family, not because they don’t believe in us, but because they don’t believe in themselves and they themselves would not take the risk to follow their heart’s deepest longings.

There are times when it is good to be open and receptive to the feedback from the outside world. It helps us to be in touch with our reflection in the“mirrors“. But there are times when the opposite is true – becoming totally deaf to what others are telling us so that we can hear our own inner voice. The story of the deaf frog who made it to the top is a story of the latter. And it’s no coincidence that it’s coming to you right now.
