“I believe that awareness … creates greater suffering than before, even if of a different order.
Many counsellors and doctors discover this only after they themselves have been conducting therapy for a long time and working with clients for years… At first, we believe that we will enlighten people. We hold a wonderful vision of an ordered cosmos and experience a profound faith in human evolution, and if we offer this solar fire to people, we assume that their lives will become better because of it. Many train as therapists with this reformist notion in mind. We assume that one is able to heal everything, cure everything, change everything…
(But) when an individual becomes more aware, they lose the luxury of blaming everyone else. This is extremely painful because there is no suitable place outside where one can dump one’s psychic rubbish.
Consciousness means accepting projections, which is equivalent to accommodating seemingly irresolvable inner conflicts.
The degree of suffering this causes can be very great, and some people feel that it represents a poor trade-off.”
