“Only choiceless awareness can lead to non-duality, to the reconciliation of opposites in a total understanding and a total love.

If you love, you can do what you will. But if you begin by doing what you want, or doing what you do not want in obedience to some traditional system or ideas, ideals and prohibitions, you will never love. The freeing process must begin with the choiceless awareness of what you desire, and of your reactions to the system of symbols which tells you that you should or should not desire. Through this choiceless awareness, which penetrates the successive layers of the self and the subconscious, there will come love and understanding, but of another order, different from that with which we are usually familiar.
This choiceless awareness—at every moment and in all the circumstances of life—is the only effective meditation. All other forms of yoga lead either to a blind thinking, which is the result of self-discipline, or to some kind of self-induced ecstasy, some form of false samadhi.”
–Jiddu Krishnamurti, The First and Last Freedom
Choiceless awareness is the means that leads to true virtue, about which Krishnamurti writes elsewhere. It is the constant contact with the truth of various aspects of our psychic reactions, however unpleasant that truth may be. It is an attitude of acceptance without judgment, which alone can reconcile the opposites within us. This union is “love and understanding of another order.“
