Jung: One must stoop a little

“I am told that I am knowledgeable or even ‘wise,’ but I cannot accept it.

There was once a man who scooped a little water from a stream in his hat. What does that mean? I am not that stream. I am at the stream, but I do nothing. There are others at the stream, but most of them think they have to do something with it.

I do nothing. I do not think that I am the one who must see to it that cherries have stalks. I stand and behold, amazed at what Nature can do.

There is a fine old legend about a rabbi and his pupil. The pupil asked: ‘In the olden days there were men who saw the face of God; why can we not see Him now?’ The rabbi answered: ‘Because today no one can stoop low enough anymore.’

One must stoop a little in order to scoop water from the stream.”

— C.G. Jung, Memories, Dreams, Reflections, p. 351

“It is not our responsibility to ensure that cherries have stalks. It is enough to open our eyes to the miracle of nature and the life that surrounds us. And to bow low… very, very low.”
