This is a reading for sensitive people with spiritual interests, in which I share part of an article by Gerrit Gielen: “From Hypersensitivity to High Sensitivity – Becoming the Angel That You Are.”
“Many people are hypersensitive. They cannot stand the noise, aggression, and hectic pace of modern society. They often suffer from psychosomatic disorders and insomnia. What others take for granted—for instance, going to a party—is a heavy burden for them. Simply doing what others perceive as ‘normal’ often turns into a real disaster for them.
As children, they often feel misunderstood and unappreciated. Because it is difficult for them to assert themselves and they easily withdraw into daydreams, school is hard for them. Making a career and being successful by society’s standards often doesn’t work for them. They more or less find their way forward by staying on the periphery of society. Participating in what is currently ‘trendy’ for others is experienced as exhausting and draining. Because of all this, their self-esteem is not very positive; they often feel insecure and inferior. Their thoughts are dark and repeat endlessly.
Of course, this image is slightly exaggerated. However, many people will (partially) recognize themselves in it. Let us now turn our attention to some of the positive traits of hypersensitive people. They truly value peace and tranquility and yearn to live in harmony with their fellow beings. They are very sensitive to beauty, especially the beauty of nature. They are very empathetic and open to the spiritual. They have a rich imagination. To their own surprise, people who have problems are naturally drawn to them and come to them for guidance.
What is the problem for these people? The answer is that they are not just hypersensitive; they are highly sensitive. In fact, they are angels in disguise.”
Something significant changes when you understand the spiritual origin of your difference and excessive sensitivity. Regardless of whether you connect with the word “angel” or not, such knowledge helps you “remember” something you have forgotten. To know the origin of your difference means knowing how to turn it into something valuable.
This is the reason I wanted to share Gerrit Gielen’s writing—in my work, I constantly encounter such “little angels.” They perfectly match the description above.
To this, I can add their strong tendency toward perfectionism and easy discouragement if things do not work out immediately and in the best possible way. Some of them have, besides moments of extreme discouragement, the exact opposite moments—when they feel very special and superior to others. Their self-esteem moves between the depths of self-loathing to the heights of self-exaltation.
In such moments, an image arises in my mind of how God would walk on Earth if He had a body. I suspect He would fall into great bewilderment as to why something doesn’t come to Him immediately and in the most perfect way. And He would hate Himself for it from the bottom of His soul. Then, because the Earth is material—a world of opposites—He would again exalt Himself to the heavens. Until He trips over His imperfection once more.
Therefore, when I encounter such a person, I find it necessary to explain what it means to live and create on Earth. I clarify that it is easy to be a god, but it is difficult to be a human. I mean being humane—warm and loving. I know it is very important for these “angels” to ground themselves so they can do the work for which they came to Earth.
One of the things that helps with this is knowing what excessive sensitivity truly means. Here is what Gerrit Gielen writes on this topic:
“What does high sensitivity mean? Every living being radiates a certain vibration or aura: the sun, people, animals, plants, and also human society as a whole. You are highly sensitive if your vibration, your aura, is finer and more delicate than the vibration of human society.
Imagine a radiant, beautiful angel coming from heaven to be born into a human body in a modern metropolis. The angel goes through great difficulties dealing with the noise and ugliness of the world around. Where is the silence and beauty of nature? Where are the flowers? Where is the deep inner knowing, the sense of unity with the cosmos? The angel feels shattered and alienated. The world around does not nourish or acknowledge them. The angel begins to think there is something wrong with them and starts to become sad or depressed. Since they do not feel at home here, they withdraw and vaguely long for another reality. People around perceive them as a dreamer who doesn’t want to face the facts of reality. The angel’s light diminishes. Having been highly sensitive in the beginning, they now become hypersensitive.
You might wonder why the angel incarnated on Earth. Many angels incarnate on Earth, and each has their own motive for being here. However, there is one primary motive: to help the Earth. Through the presence of all these angels on Earth, human society as a whole acquires light and sensitivity. The angelic presence raises the vibration of the world. This happens especially when angels remember who they are and when their confidence is restored. That is when their light truly shines.
Now imagine that you are such an angel.”
— Gerrit Gielen
Before connecting with our own power, excessive sensitivity is not felt as a gift, but as the exact opposite—a source of problems. This is where the first step in solving these problems lies: the knowledge of the spiritual origin of one’s difference, which makes us feel like alienated, self-doubting individuals. After this step, there are three more, but I will cover them in future posts.
For now, I am sharing only the first step and reminding you of the story of “The Ugly Duckling,” where the main character also suffers greatly from his difference, unaware that he has large, white wings.
