“There is no need to investigate the unconscious past within yourself, except when it manifests in the present moment as a thought, an emotion, a desire, a reaction, or an external event that happens to you. Whatever you need to know about your unconscious past, the challenges of the present will bring it to light.
If you delve into the past, it will become a bottomless pit — there is always more. You may think you need more time to understand the past or to be free of it; in other words, that the future will eventually set you free from the past. This is a delusion.
Only the present can free you from the past. Time cannot free you from time. Reach for the power of Now. That is where the key lies.”
— Eckhart Tolle, “The Power of Now”
There is a time when it is helpful to return to traumatic memories of the past in order to heal them with our new understanding and perspective. But there is also a time when the right thing to do is to stop digging into what happened to us and become awake to the truth of the here-and-now. If this post reaches you now through the principle of synchronicity, check if it isn’t time for the latter.
