Desire is Prayer: Inviting Love into Your Life

“How do we find a holy relationship? Not by asking God to change our partner, but by asking Him to change our thinking…

The prayer looks something like this: ‘Dear God, You know and I know that in this area I have more potential for neurosis than in any other. Please take my attraction, my thoughts and feelings about this person, and use them for Your purposes. Let this relationship develop according to Your will. Amen.’…

We don’t need to remind God that we would like wonderful relationships. He’s already clear on that. A Course in Miracles teaches that desire is prayer. The most sincere prayer is not: ‘Lord, send me someone wonderful,’ but: ‘Lord, help me understand that I am wonderful.’

Years ago, I used to pray for some wonderful man to show up in my life and dispel my despair. Finally, I said to myself: ‘Why don’t you get busy on that job before he arrives?’ I cannot imagine any man saying to his friend: ‘Hey, I met a desperate woman last night!'” — Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love

If this is the message that the “Lessons of Love” have brought you now, it might be a good occasion to reflect on what you want most. According to the Kabbalah, desire is the fundamental material of which we are built, and as such, it is blessed. It is the fuel that drives us forward and allows us to evolve. We all want love, but the real challenge is exactly how to invite it into our lives. This quote by Marianne Williamson answers the question: “How?”
