Jung: Consciousness with its focuses is only a minor part of the psychic

“Usually you can’t explain to others what has happened because the path of understanding is blocked by prejudice: ‘everyone is the same’, ‘such things don’t exist’, or if they do, they are ‘pathological’, and furthermore, highly irrelevant, ‘to think that such a thing could matter is monstrous hubris’, ‘it’s all just psychology’.

The latter objection is especially popular these days. It is based on a strange underestimation of the psychic, which is regarded as something subjective and arbitrary, and hence completely insignificant, and this – for all the excitement of psychology…

It is as if some sorcerers now enchant, now unenchant the soul and shape it according to their mood.

The unpleasant is denied and the unwanted is sublimated, the frightening is explained away, the delusions are refuted and eventually one decides that everything is now in its place. In this he forgets the most important thing – consciousness with its tricks is only a minor part of the psychic, the overwhelming part of which is an unconscious given – unattainable and unshakable as granite, ready at any moment to fall upon us by virtue of unknown laws.”
