{"id":151189,"date":"2012-07-10T22:40:30","date_gmt":"2012-07-10T19:40:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/espirited.com\/how-to-become-more-honest-with-our-feelings\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T18:53:41","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T16:53:41","slug":"how-to-become-more-honest-with-our-feelings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/espirited.com\/en\/how-to-become-more-honest-with-our-feelings\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Become More Honest with our Feelings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"218\" data-end=\"515\">This is a continuation of the previous <a href=\"https:\/\/espirited.com\/en\/?p=151191\">article on <strong data-start=\"268\" data-end=\"292\">Intelligent Emotions<\/strong><\/a>. In it, I briefly outline the core ideas from David Viscott\u2019s book <em data-start=\"360\" data-end=\"386\">The Language of Feelings<\/em> about the <strong data-start=\"397\" data-end=\"457\">crucial importance of being in contact with our emotions<\/strong> and being able to <strong data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"514\">express them in an appropriate way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"659\">According to Viscott, if you want to be in good contact with your feelings, it is helpful first to understand <strong data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"658\">how they are interconnected<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"1661\">\n<p data-start=\"663\" data-end=\"789\">\u201c<em><strong data-start=\"664\" data-end=\"710\">Anxiety arises when we fear injury or loss<\/strong>\u2014real or imagined, not yet suffered, or, if suffered, not yet fully accepted.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"1035\"><em>When a person suffers injury or loss, <strong data-start=\"834\" data-end=\"842\">pain<\/strong> is experienced. Pain upsets balance and demands an expenditure of energy. This reaction must be directed outward toward the source of pain. <strong data-start=\"983\" data-end=\"1033\">The expression of this energy is called anger.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1175\"><em>If this energy cannot be expressed outwardly as anger and is instead turned inward toward the self, <strong data-start=\"1142\" data-end=\"1173\">it is experienced as guilt.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1182\" data-end=\"1391\"><em>If guilt is not quickly relieved by accepting that the original anger was a <strong data-start=\"1258\" data-end=\"1281\">reasonable response<\/strong> to the original injury, it turns against the person who feels it. <strong data-start=\"1348\" data-end=\"1389\">Guilt deepens and becomes depression.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1398\" data-end=\"1471\"><em>Such depression can destroy the personality and drain it of all energy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1478\" data-end=\"1661\"><em><strong data-start=\"1478\" data-end=\"1491\">In short:<\/strong><\/em><br data-start=\"1491\" data-end=\"1494\" \/><em><strong data-start=\"1496\" data-end=\"1534\">Anxiety is fear of injury or loss.<\/strong><\/em><br data-start=\"1534\" data-end=\"1537\" \/><em><strong data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1573\">Injury or loss leads to anger.<\/strong><\/em><br data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1576\" \/><em><strong data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1614\">Suppressed anger leads to guilt.<\/strong><\/em><br data-start=\"1614\" data-end=\"1617\" \/><em><strong data-start=\"1619\" data-end=\"1660\">Unresolved guilt leads to depression.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"2190\"><em>To stop the spiral of negative emotional energy in time, <strong data-start=\"1739\" data-end=\"1792\">the first thing to do is to face your experiences<\/strong> and, instead of denying them, <strong data-start=\"1823\" data-end=\"1867\">learn to express them in an adequate way<\/strong>. Accept that <strong data-start=\"1881\" data-end=\"1924\">neither you nor the world will collapse<\/strong> if you allow your feelings to be expressed \u2014 appropriate emotional expression <strong data-start=\"2003\" data-end=\"2038\">rarely leads to loss of control<\/strong>. Anyone who does not want to accept you because you express your feelings <strong data-start=\"2113\" data-end=\"2145\">does not want you to be real<\/strong> \u2014 you can safely live without such a person.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-start=\"2192\" data-end=\"2710\"><em>The positive effect of releasing burdensome emotions is that <strong data-start=\"2253\" data-end=\"2281\">you become more truthful<\/strong>. To be truthful, you need to <strong data-start=\"2311\" data-end=\"2339\">understand what you feel<\/strong>, know <strong data-start=\"2346\" data-end=\"2378\">where the feeling comes from<\/strong>, and be able to <strong data-start=\"2395\" data-end=\"2429\">express it to the right person<\/strong>. Then, when dealing with problems, you can trust that <strong data-start=\"2484\" data-end=\"2539\">your feelings will point you in the right direction<\/strong>. Reason and its tool, logic, <strong data-start=\"2569\" data-end=\"2588\">can be deceived<\/strong> \u2014 <strong data-start=\"2591\" data-end=\"2618\">feelings tell the truth<\/strong>. The deepest truthfulness goes beyond human distortions \u2014 <strong data-start=\"2677\" data-end=\"2709\">there are no illusions in it<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"3177\"><em><strong data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"2740\">The language of feelings<\/strong> is the means by which you connect with yourself; and if you cannot communicate with yourself, <strong data-start=\"2835\" data-end=\"2880\">you cannot communicate with others either<\/strong>. When you open your awareness to the messages of your feelings, <strong data-start=\"2945\" data-end=\"2968\">you release anxiety<\/strong> and begin to <strong data-start=\"2982\" data-end=\"3023\">recognize your intuition more clearly<\/strong>. You will start perceiving more in others, because you will be able to receive the information they emit <strong data-start=\"3129\" data-end=\"3176\">without it being distorted by your defenses<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-start=\"3179\" data-end=\"3575\"><em>And when you learn to sense what is happening in the souls of others, you will learn to sense <strong data-start=\"3273\" data-end=\"3323\">more of what is happening deep within yourself<\/strong>. Feelings you were not even aware of before will reveal themselves. When you reach the point where <strong data-start=\"3423\" data-end=\"3456\">intellect and feeling overlap<\/strong>, you will begin to perceive the constant flow between the two \u2014 and it will become <strong data-start=\"3540\" data-end=\"3574\">easier to discern what is real<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-start=\"3577\" data-end=\"3658\"><em>And when you are in contact with reality, <strong data-start=\"3619\" data-end=\"3657\">you can influence it and change it<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-start=\"3660\" data-end=\"3677\"><em><strong data-start=\"3660\" data-end=\"3677\">\u2013David Viscott<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3679\" data-end=\"3925\">This is the principle: <strong data-start=\"3702\" data-end=\"3771\">if you want to take care of how you feel, take care of your mind.<\/strong> And the first thing the mind needs to know is <strong data-start=\"3818\" data-end=\"3925\">how important it is to notice emotions without judging them, but with the intention to understand them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3927\" data-end=\"4636\">This is the metaphor: the relationship between mind and emotions is <strong data-start=\"3995\" data-end=\"4045\">the same as that between a parent and a child.<\/strong> Emotions, even the most hostile ones, are <strong data-start=\"4088\" data-end=\"4114\">innocent like children<\/strong>. They are what they are; we cannot force them to feel differently. But we <strong data-start=\"4189\" data-end=\"4223\">can understand and soothe them<\/strong>. The whole effort of developing emotional intelligence lies in developing a mind that becomes <strong data-start=\"4318\" data-end=\"4377\">the strong and reliable parent we always wished we had.<\/strong> This is the only condition under which the inner child (our emotional body) can feel <strong data-start=\"4463\" data-end=\"4481\">safe and loved<\/strong>. It knows that this inner parent is always there, accepts it as it is, and can be relied upon to say <strong data-start=\"4583\" data-end=\"4636\">when something is appropriate and when it is not.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4638\" data-end=\"5054\">This is the neurophysiology of emotional reactions: in transforming intense emotions, <strong data-start=\"4724\" data-end=\"4770\">the decisive role belongs to the neocortex<\/strong> (the cerebral cortex, the most recently evolved part of the human brain). It processes the primary reactions that arise in the emotional brain (the older part of the brain associated with the limbic system and the amygdala), so that they can be <strong data-start=\"5016\" data-end=\"5053\">calmed, understood, and regulated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5056\" data-end=\"5127\">This is <strong data-start=\"5064\" data-end=\"5100\">emotional intelligence in action<\/strong> \u2014 it is called <strong data-start=\"5116\" data-end=\"5126\">wisdom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5129\" data-end=\"5152\"><strong data-start=\"5129\" data-end=\"5152\">Kameliya Hadzhiyska<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>*Translation from Bulgarian<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a continuation of the previous article on Intelligent Emotions.
